Say Whaaat?

Here are some words that OB nurses and physicians use and say all the time.  Now you will know the code!

Primigravida - this is your first pregnancy

Multigravida - this is NOT your first pregnancy

Grand Multip - you've had a lot of babies and when you go complete you could probably cough this one out!

Complete -  you've made it to 10 centimeters and 100% effaced...any time now you will start pushing.

CPD - your hips are too narrow...your baby wont fit through your pelvis, no matter how much pushing you do.

Preterm - you are less than 37 weeks.

PIH - high blood pressure caused by being pregnant.

Eclamptic - you have PIH and now you're having seizures.

Mag - magnesium sulfate, a drug used to prevent you from having seizures or to help you stop contracting if you're preterm.

Laboring Down - the nurse and doctor is going to allow your baby to find the exit on it's own. This means you wont push as long.  Woohoo!

Pit - Pitocin or Oxytocin. A drug that is like gasoline for your contractions...it's purpose is to make you contract harder and faster.
